Preparing your own income tax return can be a task that leaves you with more questions than answers. According to a study released by the US Government's General Accounting Office last year, most taxpayers (77% of 71 million taxpayers) believe they benefited from using a professional tax preparer.

Whether we like it or not, today's tax laws are so complicated that filing a relatively simple return can be confusing. It is just too easy to overlook deductions and credits to which you are entitled.

Even if you use a computer software program there's no substitute for the assistance of an experienced tax professional.  According to The Wall Street Journal, these packages "don't pretend to offer professional advice about how to treat complicated types of income or deductions under the many gray areas of our confusing and arcane tax code."

A vital step in every tax return I prepare is to search for tax planning opportunities.  Are there practical and sensible strategies that will reduce your future taxes?  If so, I share those ideas with you and make specific recommendations on how to implement.

Here's what your get at my firm:

  • Tax return preparation that is thorough, unhurried, and organized.
  •
  • Up-to-date technical knowledge and professional computer software.
  •
  • The option to file electronically, which will reduce IRS input errors, save paper, and speed your refund.
  •
  • Reasonable fees and exceptional personal service.
  •
  • A year round relationship and source for financial guidance.
  •
  • The expertise of a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner.
  •
  • And above all, a quality return prepared with the greatest of concern.

Business Returns

In addition to individual tax returns, I have many years experience preparing returns for corporations, partnerships, and limited liability companies.  These returns are generally more complicated than individual returns, and require a combination of tax law expertise and business acumen.

Beginning with your business' financial records, I compile the data needed for your tax return.  After completing the return, I provide you with adjustments and other schedules to reconcile your records with the tax return.

If you use QuickBooks for your accounting records, then you can send a backup file to me using my secure client portal.  That will provide most of the data needed for your business tax return.

If your books are a mess and substantial work is needed to make them complete and accurate, then perhaps hiring an outside bookkeeper is a cost-effective option.  Based on your needs, I will recommend an experienced and trusted bookkeeper to help you.

Tax-Exempt Organizations

The annual tax return for a tax-exempt organization is a unique blend of financial data and required disclosure information about the organization's activities.  Since returns are available for public inspection, the skill and expertise of the tax preparer is important in shaping how your organization is perceived; not only by the IRS but by the public.

My experience preparing tax-exempt returns includes a variety of organizations and reporting needs, and I welcome the opportunity to serve your organization.

How the process works

My goal is for tax preparation to be as convenient for you as possible.  So the process can be flexible based on your preferences.  For example, some of my tax clients choose to meet with me twice - before and after I complete the return.  Others prefer only one meeting - either before or after the return is completed.  And some prefer to communicate by telephone, mail, fax, or email and forego a personal meeting.  So you decide which option is best for you.

As you might expect, my workload increases dramatically as tax season progresses.  I generally work on and complete projects based on a "first-in first-out" priority system.
